Women’s History Month
Heroes Right at Home are Helping to Recognize Women in All FieldsThe list of scientific achievements in the past century is beyond impressive but women are far too overlooked and uncredited for their achievements in those endeavors. Women in science, technology, engineering, and math fields are only beginning to get the recognition they deserve, and it’s largely thanks to groups like Women In Mining who encourage more to pursue fields of interest once considered off-limits to them. The group, which was founded in Denver in 1972, celebrated its 50th anniversary and we were on hand to document their historic achievement. The group started right here thanks to three women who contacted mining industry leaders to learn how they could contribute to the field and recognize each other. Now spanning nine chapters, including a student chapter, Women In Mining carries the banner forward for inclusion, diversity, education, inspiration, and advocacy. Women’s History Month raises awareness that, while we explore the limits of our understanding of science and our planet, it’s homegrown heroes like Women In Mining that cultivate and foster an attitude that everyone can participate in those fields to push our horizons further.
