It’ll Take More Than a Month to Recognize What Native Americans Have Given the Rest of Us
Underrated, overlooked and undeniably great, Native American culture needs more than one month to celebrate and appreciate. Their culture is one of America’s great and longstanding contributions to the world: A civilization that honors nature and people, with an emphasis on compassion and holistic viewpoints. That’s baked into our country, folks.
Yet, on our calendars and in our minds, we consider November to be the month we thank Native Americans for their contributions and give them credit for helping early pilgrims during a brutal winter. Native American culture deserves more credit than that. America’s history and present is filled with Native American pioneers, ranging from Olympic gold medalist and football player Jim Thorpe to actor Jason Momoa, to Sacagawea and Sitting Bull. What do we mean? America’s native people figure just as much in our present as they do in our past.
As we celebrate Native American Heritage Month this month, we’re reminded every month of the vibrant and significant cultural, philosophical, and practical contributions of Native Americans. Their influences on our society are reflected in the ways we think about nature, culture, and history—and they’re relevant now more than ever.
