Denver’s not just a hockey or football title town any longer. After 46 long years of waiting, the Denver Nuggets not just made the NBA Finals for the first time, they won for the first time, too. Throughout their franchise history, the Nuggets have had plenty of winning pieces in place – we’ve just never hoisted the Larry O’Brien trophy before.
We’re not just talking about the Carmelo-AI-Kmart years either. Our Nuggets fandom reaches back to Alex English, Dikembe Mutombo, Doug Moe, George Karl days and before. The King of Park Hill, Chauncey Billups, will always be a Nugget in our hearts. Same goes for Dan Issel and Kiki, too. We love ‘em.
What’s more, we love how they won. Instead of inflated egos and exorbitant star power, Denver won their championship the homegrown way. A second-round pick from Serbia and a seventh-overall pick from Kentucky fresh from an injury (Jokic and Murray, respectively) formed the base, and talent like KCP, Aaron Gordon and Bruce Brown filled in the gaps. No LeBron or Kyrie to be found at all.
And that kind of commitment is worth celebrating. Thomas “Detour” Evans is a renowned artist, sculptor, and inspiration to Denver who is sharing his passion with our city right now. Call it a Nuggets Mount Rushmore, but we call it beautiful. Check it out on Colfax on your way to the parade. We’ll see you there! Cheers!
