Our Cups are More Than Full
An Unforgettable Night For the Best Trophy In Sports
There’s nothing better than the Stanley Cup.
Check that: There are a couple of things that are better. Game 7 of the Stanley Cup, where the winner takes all after 60 minutes of do-or-die hockey, is better. Even better than that? When national pride and bragging rights between the U.S.A. and Canada are on the line. That’s better still.
It’s what we all got to see last night in the final game of the Stanley Cup Finals on a historic night for the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers. The Panthers were playing for their first championship in the franchise’s 30-year history, and Edmonton sought to bring the Stanley Cup trophy back to Canada for the first time in 30 years. The stakes couldn’t have been higher, and the game delivered in every way.
That’s because the trophy itself is the best in the world. The short of the long? Every winning team gets the names of their players engraved on it, and the team passes it around among themselves the whole year they have it to do whatever they want with it. The trophy tradition is part of what makes hockey so special to us and the players.
Our beloved Avalanche didn’t repeat their championship season this year, sadly. But when the trophy was in town, you better believe we jumped at the chance to see it in person. It’s special to see a championship, but even more special to have (just a small) piece of the best trophy in sports. It’s why we have ice in our veins, and that’s a good thing!
