MLK Day 2024
Trombone Shorty
This week, we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the myriad ways he changed our culture, country, and communities, and his lasting legacies as one of America’s foundational influences for nonviolence, free speech, human and civil rights, and more. To say that Dr. King has shaped America is an understatement; in many ways, he’s the embodiment of what we can aspire to be.
Carrying forward Dr. King’s message falls on all of us, and there are countless stories to tell – the space in this is just not enough. One story we know well and one that we’re proud to have photographed is Trombone Shorty and his foundation, which strives to bring music to children and underserved communities. Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews has been playing music in his home of New Orleans since his trombone was taller than him. Throughout his career, he’s uplifted those around him by spreading his message of heritage, mentorship, and education through his music. If you want to learn more about Trombone Shorty’s work, head to the Foundation’s website here.
At home, Denver has countless organizations that continue Dr. King’s legacy and the work he did more than a half-century ago. We wouldn’t be the same without those efforts, and that’s the point. The more people work for change, the better we all are.
