The End of Anything is the Beginning of Something Else
As we photographed last month the University of Colorado Affinity Groups’ graduation ceremonies, which included Asian-American Pacific Islander, Black, Latinx, LGBTQ+, Native American, and student groups, we were overwhelmed with the students’ achievements. Not only did these young adults finish school – the longest and also shortest 16 years of anyone’s life – but they were also beginning something else: their new lives.
We’re all too guilty of forgetting the end is just a new beginning. We focus on the finish line and forget: It’s the same as another start line. For these students, their caps and gowns are symbols of achievement that reach all the way back to the Middle Ages. Looking ahead, the caps and gowns will also soon reveal the lab coats, suits and ties, dresses, shirts, corporate logo wear, flip flops and any other clothing that their new lives and careers will bring to them.
As much as we can say to the graduating class of 2024: Congratulations. Even more than that? The end of your college career is just the beginning of your working career. Enjoy both and celebrate every milestone along the way. You’ve earned it.
