Caring for The World
Helping Thousands Find Critical Care
On average, most of us will need surgery 9 times throughout our lives. Yet, over half of the world – up to 5 billion people – don’t have access to high-quality surgery where they live. What’s more, surgery can cure up to 1/3 of all human illnesses and dramatically improve the quality of life for billions of people worldwide.
In 2003, Dr. Peter Daly volunteered in Honduras at a home for orphaned, abandoned, or disadvantaged youth. There, he met 9-year-old Angela whose severe deformity in her legs prohibited her from walking and required her to use a wheelchair. As a surgeon in Minnesota, Dr. Daly knew Angela’s road forward required surgical attention coupled with physical therapy and rehabilitation. After bringing Angela back to the U.S., Dr. Daly knew that access to surgical care was paramount for Angela and billions like her around the world.
In 2017, One World Surgery was created with the help of Dr. Daly, Surgical Care Affiliates, Summit Orthopedics, and Holy Family Surgery Center to provide accessible care to billions around the world and at home. To date, the organization has performed more than 12,590 surgeries and consulted more than 118,000 patients. Their care goes beyond borders, it goes beyond comprehension. We were fortunate enough to photograph their recent fundraising efforts in Denver to spread their mission of accessible care to millions around the world. While most of us dread the thought of surgery, we recognize that surgical care might not be available to many people around the world, and that’s even scarier. We salute those who help others and can’t wait to help One World Surgery and its mission in the future.
