Everlasting Outlaw
There’ll Never be Another Musician Like ‘Shotgun Willie’ |
American music wouldn’t be the same without Willie Nelson. One of the great American “outlaws” turned 91 this week, and we’re reminded of Willie’s contribution to our music and, even more than that, our memories.
When Garrett first moved to Colorado about 25 years ago, he met Willie on tour. If you’ve followed us for a while, you’d know that Garrett and music go together like fish and water. Garrett distinctly remembers asking Willie for an autograph and what was Willie’s reaction? “Thanks.” One of only two musicians Garrett remembers thanking him for asking for an autograph (the other is Gregg Allman who, if you know Garrett, then you know how much Gregg means to him) before signing it. Garrett later photographed Willie in concert in Loveland years later. (Photo below.)
Willie’s contribution to American music, farmers, and our landscape is undeniable. Whether through co-founding Farm Aid in the 1980s, providing relief to families affected in the attacks on Sept. 11, or helping to create the framework for modern country music (and plenty of other genres!), Willie has endured as both a humanitarian, environmental protector, and outstanding musician.
He celebrates two birthdays: April 29, the day he was born, and April 30, the day his birth was recorded (small-town Texas moves at its own speed) every year. We celebrate Willie today, tomorrow, and every day thanks to his efforts in creating a sound that’s distinctly our own. He famously eats the same breakfast every morning, a bowl of oatmeal and a cup of coffee, and doesn’t appear to be slowing down at all.
