Freedom Includes All of Us
Independence DayOur Declaration of Independence asks all of us to work together.Most of us can recite the Declaration of Independence from memory — at least the start of it, anyhow. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” That much is as powerful as it is memorable. But this year, ahead of the Fourth of July, we remember the final words of the Declaration of Independence, which are just as powerful — albeit few among us can recall. “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our Sacred honor.” That’s a long way to say freedom isn’t a solo venture. It requires faith in a power that wants us to be free and trust in each other that we’re all working toward the same goals: equality and freedom. For nearly 250 years now, we’ve celebrated the Fourth of July as our collective Independence Day. We hope to remember that this year freedom doesn’t come from one of us but all of us working with a collaborative spirit of independence for ourselves and each other.
