A New Generation for an Old Important Story
Recounting the Past is Important for Our FutureSome stories are timeless. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t difficult to tell.
The story of Anne Frank and her breathtaking resilience in the face of hatred is one such story, and it’s one that most of us have heard at some point in our lives. But telling the next generation what happened to Anne as she hid from German troops during World War II can be difficult, confusing, and tricky—especially for children. “Where Is Anne Frank?” helps us. The animated film, directed by Ari Folman, brings to life Anne’s imaginary character “Kitty” from her famous diary. It’s the first film funded by The Anne Frank Fonds Basel, which gave Folman unprecedented access to Anne’s diary, family archives and more. We were privileged to be able to photograph the discussion and Q&A with Folman at the Mizel Arts & Culture Center last month, near Cherry Creek. Folman’s passion for telling Anne’s story is evident, and we hope his work will live on long past us. That’s perhaps the most important part. However difficult or uncomfortable, a story like Anne Frank’s deserves to be immortal to preserve our past and hopefully prevent something like it from ever happening again. |
